The word Cantera in Spanish is “quarry”. The Cantera stone we use was caused by volcanic reactions forming into stone billions of years ago. Each region in North America has its unique Cantera stones, producing different colors, hardness and textures throughout. We mine selected areas and quarries so as to produce only the most unique qualities in each sculpture. “Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed largely of the minerals calcite and aragonite. Many limestones are composed from skeletal fragments of marine organisms such as coral or foraminifera. Travertine is a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs, especially hot springs. Travertine often has a fibrous or concentric appearance and exists in white, tan, and cream-colored varieties. It is formed by a process of rapid precipitation of calcium carbonate, often at the mouth of a hot spring or in a limestone cave. Marble is a non-foliated metamorphic rock composed of recrystallized carbonate minerals, most commonly calcite or dolomite.”
